Summary of MBCT (Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy)

What is the treatment and how does it work?

-a treatment for people with multiple episodes of major depression, currently in remission

-teaches meditation techniques and uses cognitive therapy to help people learn to prevent return (relapse) of their depression

-meditation practices help people to spend more time in the present moment, be more aware of thoughts, feelings and body sensations as they arise – this can help them to have more healthy choices around how they react to thoughts/feelings that otherwise might lead to depression

What is the MBCT group like?

-group setting is comprised of approximately 12 people and 2 therapists

-8 sessions from 5-7:15 on Mondays and one all day retreat session on Saturday

-format is like a call than a therapy group, although there is time for sharing responses to the program

-all participants must agree to keep group members’ privacy by maintaining confidentiality about what is said in the group

-therapists have their own meditation practice and have studied with one of the founders of MCBT
